WF113 Repertoire Classics for Alto Saxophone Compiled and edited by Lee Patrick 9780825882784 Books

Had the saxophone been developed a century or two earlier, and had its main path in musical society been "classical" rather than jazz and "pop" as it was, a great body of literature would doubtless exist. But still today, despite musical pioneers who proved its worth as a classical instrument with - in the right hands - an exquisitely beautiful tone and nonpareil expressive qualities, the general public does not take the saxophone seriously as a classical instrument. There are those of us, however, who do, and Lee Patrick is one. His career as a performer and teacher led to some perfectly wonderful arranging of a variety of literature so that we who enjoy the saxophone as a classical instrument have more options to play not just the concerti written within the last seven plus decades for leading performers, but also some of the standards.

I keep wondering how publishers think they can market such a collection without listing contents. I will do so, not to help corporate sales but to assist Mr. Patrick's efforts and buyers who need this information. Sorry that a variety of foreign-language accents are missing - can't discover how to make them in this Amazon format.

All of the above are printed parts for the solo instrument. The piano accompaniment must be printed from PDF files on the CD if needed. And the CD is where one may find the MP3 files to be played so the player can have the experience of performing with accompaniment if a live pianist is not easily found.

One caveat is that high F# is liberally sprinkled in these pieces, with the occasional high G as well. Modern altos generally do have high F# but vintage instruments, which many of us play, do not. That means that a player will have to be quite good at altissimo before being able to perform many of these pieces, as the lowest altissimo notes can be the hardest.

On my first run-through I did note some discrepancies, a few notes, from the versions of these pieces that I am long used to. If I can document these, I will so note.
